Being a better you.

Howdy Doody sez...

Begin your day by choosing to be a Better You.

Choose to be ENERGETIC—instead of permitting yourself to become run-down and burned-out.

Choose to be PASSIONATE—instead of permitting yourself to become apathetic and indifferent.

Choose to be ENTHUSIASTIC—instead of permitting yourself to become half-hearted and discouraged.

Choose to be SELF-DIRECTED—instead of permitting yourself to become directionless and
uncertain.

Choose to be PREPARED—instead of permitting yourself to become shortsighted and reactive.

Choose to be FOCUSED—instead of permitting yourself to become scattered and impulsive.

Choose to be SUPPORTIVE—instead of permitting yourself to become critical and judgmental.

Choose to be SYSTEMATIC—instead of permitting yourself to become haphazard and disorganized.

Choose to be TIMELY—instead of permitting yourself to become distracted and preoccupied.

Choose to be PROACTIVE—instead of permitting yourself to become procrastinating and hesitant.

SMILE... SMILE... SMILE...

When Was The Last Time You Had Any Fun? One great way to cultivate an energetic attitude is to be sure you enjoy what you do. Look for things that are fun to do, and find new ways to have fun at what you're already doing.
Smile and laugh as much as possible. Instead of lunch, why not go to recess?

"An optimist may see a light where there is none, but why must the pessimist always run to blow it out?"
~ Michel De Saint-Pierre

Psychoneuroimmunology

Go for it -  Read on!

Beyond Positive Thinking

By Arnold Fox, M. D. & Barry Fox, Ph.D.
Beyond Positive Thinking
Doctors cannot cure 90% of our ailments, for these are problems of "thought disease," of psychoneuroimmunology, problems that begin with our negative thoughts and negative actions. The cure is to give ourselves a spiritual tune-up. Like any other engine, the human engine must be kept running smooth. How do we do this? With good eating, good exercise, good living and good thinking.
We must replace every weak thought with a strong every negative thought with a positive one, every hateful thoughts with a loving one, and every sad thought with a joyful one.
Are our thoughts so important? Well, our thoughts become our words, our-words become our actions, our actions become our habits and our habits become our character. From thoughts to character, from thoughts to biochemistry, from thoughts to health or disease, the pathway is clear.
Marcus Aurelius wrote: "A man's life is what his thoughts make of it."
Napoleon Hill summed it up when he said: "Anything the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve."

"B Positive" Benefits

I'm a "B Positive" person.
 BENEFITS OF BEING POSITIVE
Jon Gordon, The Jon Gordon Companies, Inc.

Over the years I've done a lot of research on the positive effects of being positive and the negative affects of being negative. The research is clear. It really does pay to be positive and the benefits include enhanced health and longevity, happiness, career advancement, athletic performance, team building and financial success. Being positive is not just a nice way to live. It’s the way to live. In this spirit here are 11 benefits of being positive.

1.
Positive People Live Longer - In a study of nuns, those that regularly expressed positive emotions lived on average 10 years longer. (The Nun Study)

2.
Positive work environments outperform negative work environments. (Daniel Goleman)

3.
Positive, optimistic sales people sell more than pessimistic sales people. (Martin Seligman)

4.
Positive leaders are able to make better decisions under pressure. (Heartmath.org)

5.
Marriages are much more likely to succeed when the couple experiences a 5 to 1 ratio of positive to negative interactions whereas when the ratio approaches 1 to 1, marriages are more likely to end in divorce. (John Gottman)

6.
Positive people who regularly express positive emotions are more resilient when facing stress, challenges and adversity. (Several Studies)

7.
Positive people are able to maintain a broader perspective and see the big picture which helps them identify solutions where as negative people maintain a narrower perspective and tend to focus on problems. (Barbara Fredrickson)

8.
Positive thoughts and emotions counter the negative effects of stress. For example, you can't be thankful and stressed at the same time. (Several Studies)

9.
Positive emotions such as gratitude and appreciation help athletes perform at a higher level. (Heartmath.org)

10.
Positive people have more friends which is a key factor of happiness and longevity. (Robert D. Putnam)

11.
Positive and popular leaders are more likely to garner the support of others and receive pay raises and promotions and achieve greater success in the workplace. (Several Studies)

Believe it and you will see it!!!

Napoleon Hill
Being a better you in the New Year!

Here we go again with Napoleon Hill.
17 Principles of Success
by Anonymous on September 27, 2009

In 1908, Napoleon Hill was commissioned by billionaire industrialist Andrew Carnegie to interview over 500 of the world’s most powerful men in order construct a “success philosophy.” Over a span of 20 years, he assembled the data from these interviews into 15 principles that could be used by anyone in the general population to make progress in their lives.

He checked 15 of these principles with Andrew Carnegie time and time again until he had enough readiness to write his first book featuring these principles. This book was called “The Law of Success” and it was published in 1928. After the first edition, he added two additional principles to the list which were already vicariously described in the first and last chapter of the book.

These 17 principles of success are important because they can be used by anyone to achieve any goal that they aspire to. This has been proven because millions of people have put these principles into action and benefited from them even in cases when they weren’t aware of the principles themselves.

The best way to benefit from these principles is to make them a part of your daily routine. You won’t gain much if you try a few of them once or twice and then revert back to the opposing habits that cancel them out. This is the reason why all of them are presented as habits that are to be mastered gradually over time.

The 17 Principles of Success by Napoleon Hill
  1. Definiteness of Purpose – The habit of focusing your actions and thoughts on one high and desirable goal in life
  2. Mastermind Alliance – The habit of working in complete harmony with others for the attainment of a specific objective
  3. Going the Extra Mile – The habit of doing more than is required of you with the expectation of receiving greater compensation from direct or vicarious sources
  4. Applied Faith – The habit of acting as if you already have what you want in life
  5. Pleasing Personality – The habit of being generally agreeable and friendly with people
  6. Personal Initiative – The habit of starting tasks that are important to you and seeing them through to completion
  7. Positive Mental Attitude – The habit of looking for the positive side of every situation in life—especially during times of turmoil and adversity
  8. Enthusiasm – The habit of keeping yourself energized by focusing your life on what you love most
  9. Self-Discipline – The habit of choosing not to make negative choices that will cost you more than you gain
  10. Accurate Thinking – The habit of making decisions and forming opinions that are based on factual information and tangible evidence
  11. Controlled Attention – The habit of prioritizing your time and energy to stay focused on what is most important and beneficial
  12. Teamwork – [Basically the same as the Mastermind Alliance principle]
  13. Learning from Adversity and Defeat – The habit of learning from adversity and defeat and making gradual improvements because of those experiences
  14. Creative Vision – The habit of visualizing the things that you want most and the actions that will help you to acquire them
  15. Maintenance of Sound Health – The habit of keeping your energy level up by eating healthy food and participating in physical exercise
  16. Budgeting of Time and Money – The habit of taking time everyday to move closer to your definite major purpose and saving money to ensure steady financial growth
  17. Cosmic Habit force – The habit of repeating desirable thought patterns and behaviors until they become effortless and self-moving
3 Tips for Using the 17 Principles of Success
  1. Keep in the mind that the first four principles are said to be the most prominent and will likely give you the fastest results.
  2. It is also helpful to know that you can easily ingrain each of these principles into your personality by mastering one principle in your daily life per week in a sequential fashion.
  3. Most interesting of all, you can mix any of these principles together to create a concept that is even more powerful. Look through these principles again and use your imagination to figure out what two principles would change your life the fastest if you combined them and put them into action today. To start you off, you could combine the “Going the Extra Mile” principle with the “Definite Major Purpose” principle.
Take action...
Print this article and put it next to your goals for 2011. Are your goals congruent with Hill's 17 principles.

Goal setting for 2011

2011
Welcome to the New Year.

It's that time to write down your Goals for 2011.

Business and Personal plans deserve your attention now with specific goals set for each.

Yes, I said each.

Laura Posey, CEO and Co-Founder of Dancing Elephants Achievement Group writes... Here's a few of my best reasons to make time in the next two weeks to get a plan done.

Focus Changes Everything

Having a plan forces you to decide where to focus your time, energy and money in the c
oming year. Focus is the force that drives all things to greater power and success. An unfocused stream of light creates a gentle illumination while a focused stream creates a laser beam capable of cutting through any obstacle. An unfocused team of rowers wanders around the water, while a focused team can conquer any ocean.

Writing Goals Down Changes Your Brain

For years, scientists have known that the act of writing things down changes the way they are stored in your brain. That’s why you had to spend so much time in school writing out your multiplication tables, etc. Writing your plan plants seeds in your subconscious that can dramatically increase your likelihood of achieving. Even if you fall short of your ultimate goals, you’ll likely far exceed what you would have accomplished had you not bothered to plan.

Planning Doesn’t Have To Be Hard

When I ask people why they don’t have a plan, many tell me they don’t have time to write a huge plan and, even if they did, they probably wouldn’t use it anyway. It is just to easy to go back to winging it as real life deviates from what you planned. Proper planning doesn’t have to take tons of time or result in the death of a hundred trees. You can create a complete annual plan in just 20 minutes and use only one sheet of paper. Best of all, the plan you create will be flexible enough to accommodate changes in the economy and your business as the year progresses. A plan shouldn’t be a prison but rather guardrails on the highway to your goals.

Managing Time

An Idea For Action...

Do You Think Before You React?

Don't just react automatically to the urgent. If you take the time to choose how and where to spend your time, you will become infinitely more productive.
Take the time to review your prioritized list before you divert your attention to a less important, more urgent task.
Questions to ponder…

If you had last week to do over, how and where would you spend your time differently?

Can you really afford NOT to consider all the alternatives and consequences before you respond?

How can you respond best to the next person who requires an immediate reply?

Think.

Few things possess more Power than a Thought.

Because a Thought has the potential
to be become something significant.
To solve something meaningful.
And to inspire us to achieve great things.

What makes a Thought so powerful
is that it can be created by anybody.
At any time.
From anywhere.

That's why Thinking should be encouraged
and nutured in all its forms.
No matter how small.
Or how impossibly grand.

Because whenever Thinking happens,
Big ideas follow.
Minds become enlightened.
Knowledge grows.
And people discover new ways to unlock their
Potential.

So start Thinking.

Interesting stuff to ponder.

Dysfunction In The Workplace?

Roxanne Emmerich, author of the best seller Thank God It’s Monday , just reported the latest research about dysfunction in the workplace.

1. Over 91% of people spend a huge chunk of their day frustrated by their coworkers’ dysfunctional behavior and think regularly about quitting their job.
2. Managers waste about 37% or more of their day dealing with dysfunctional behavior.
3. One out of every three payroll dollars is lost for good due to disengaged employees.
Makes you stop and think about how successful we could all be if we replaced dysfunctional behaviors with passion and creativity.

Is God Inside The Brain Or Outside?

Barbara Bradley Hagerty, religious correspondent for NPR, recently wrote about a woman who had brain surgery. Besides being under during the surgery, all the blood was drained from her brain in order to do the procedure. When she was conscious again, she was able to describe the operating theatre, who was there, the surgical tools that were used and even the exact conversations between the staff.

All of this raises questions as to whether consciousness is inside the brain or is it somehow being transmitted to us. Are we similar to a radio receiver tuning in to the signals being sent to us?
(Reported USA Today June 22, 2009)
A quote from Anonymous.
"Our lives are not determined by what happens to us but by how we react to what happens, Not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events, and outcomes. It is a catalyst, a spark that creates extraordinary results.”
What say you?

Listening better

I never learned much in school about being a good listener. And yet , I have to practice it all the time as a personal development and business coach.

Here's what I do...

First, I put up my ears, then I put my tongue between my teeth and do what Andrew Weiss advises for deep listneing:

Be present. Give the other person your complete attention Be aware of what is happening inside you.

• Be open. Put aside all your assumptions about who this person is and try to listen to who they are right now. Ask questions that convey your deep concern.

• Stay aware of your emotions. Notice what happens to you when you are hearing something you find difficult or painful. Often someone's issues will deeply touch our own. We need to recognize those feelings, breathe deeply, and release those feelings in order to continue listening with attention.

• Make space. If emotions run too high, ask for a short break. This may be painful for the other person, but tell them you will be a better listener if you take some time to let your own emotions drain out and do something to feed your compassion and love.

Listen first and talk second is good for relationhips.

And that's no nonsense...

Make lots of gr8 days.

Communication

Be a better you.
Improve your communication with another person.

A few tips from Linda Talley, "The Body Language Expert" to use at home or at the office.

So simple to do. No energy needed.

1. Instead of talking to another person using “hitler” hands, turn them around with palms facing up. This is less threatening and indicates a desire for “coming together” in community. People will tend to be more open with you during discussions or giving feedback.
2. If you’re sitting down, instead of leaning back in your chair, lean towards the other person. This shows interest and empathy.
3. Move your chair so that you’re sitting at a 45 degree angle to the other person vs the confrontational position where you are directly across/in front of them. This helps the other person relax by taking pressure off the conversation.
4. Keep your legs and arms uncrossed. Many people tell me it’s just comfortable for them to sit with their legs or arms crossed and my response is: “Yes, but what does it make the other person feel like?”
5. Refuse to walk and talk about business. It’s a waste of time anyway because neither one of you are listening to what is being said. You are watching the other person’s movement. When you really want to understand the other person, stand still, in an open, positive position and talk or listen.

When you make the other person comfortable, they will relax, exhale and you will learn a lot more about them.
